Specimen Collection and Handling

The first syringe drawn should be used to make slides and the aspirate clot. 6 to 8 slides should be made if possible from the bone marrow spicules. The blood remaining in the syringe is dispensed in a red top tube and allowed to clot. This will be used for the aspirate clot.

 

The second syringe drawn should be used to fill the sodium heparin tube and the EDTA tubes.

 

Bone Biopsy: 1-2 slides will be used for touch preps from the bone biopsy if possible. This bone will be used for the biopsy.
