Test Code LAB2005 PRO B-TYPE NATRIURETIC PEPTIDE (PBNP)

Performing Laboratory

Mohawk Valley Health System Laboratory

Day(s) Performed

Performed: Daily

Routine TAT: Same Day

Available as a STAT test

Intended Use

The Atellica® IM NT-proBNPII (PBNPII) assay is for in vitro diagnostic use in the quantitative
determination of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in human serum and
plasma (EDTA and lithium heparin) using the Atellica® IM Analyzer.

In the Emergency Department (ED) and Outpatient (OP) populations, measurements of
NT-proBNP are used as an aid in the diagnosis of heart failure (HF) in patients with clinical
suspicion of new onset or worsening HF.

Clinical Summary

Left ventricular dysfunction can occur as part of coronary heart disease, arterial hypertension,
valvular disease, and primary myocardial disease. If the left ventricular dysfunction remains
untreated and is progressive, the potential for mortality is high, for example, due to sudden
cardiac death.

Chronic cardiac insufficiency is a clinical syndrome caused by impairment of the cardiac
pumping function. Based on the symptoms, the presence and severity of cardiac insufficiency
is classified in stages I–IV by the New York Heart Association (NYHA). Clinical tests and imaging
procedures are used to diagnose left ventricular dysfunction.

Specimen Collection and Handling

Collect a Green Top (lithium heparin), serum separator (SST), or Red Top tube.

Storage

• After centrifugation, serum specimens stored on the clot are stable for up to 24 hours at
2–8°C.

• Separated samples are stable for up to 3 days at room temperature, and for up to 4 days at
2–8°C.

• Separated samples are stable at = -20°C for up to 12 months. Avoid more than
1 freeze-thaw cycle. Do not store in a frost-free freezer. Thoroughly mix thawed samples
and centrifuge them before using.
